Salesian Literature

The Lenten Sermons Francis de Sales preached in Dijon in 1604 marked the beginning of an exchange of letters of spiritual direction with several women of high birth in Burgundy. Among these were Madame de Chantal and two of her friends: Madame Brûlart and her younger sister, the abbess of Putis d’Orbe. Marie Bourgeois married Nicolas Brûlart, a president of the Burgundian Parliament, in 1602. Francis’s sermons had inspired the young woman to live her Christian commitment in a more fervent manner, but she needed guidance, especially in leading a devout life in the midst of the responsibilities and privileges of her high position. Because she was energetic, active, and anxious, Francis had to be patient in encouraging her to be calm and to avoid excess.

Principal means of uniting oneself to God and to others
Do not expect an immediate reward in devotion
Be convinced that God wants you to serve Him just as you are
Do not yield to discouragement on account of frailties
