St. Francis de Sales

PATRON OF THE DEAF

[[extract from Noel Rebello, Salesian Spirituality: A Source book, p. 28]

Francis took into his household a young man who was deaf.  He is credited with having gradually devised sign language for communicating with him.  Eventually, it is reported that the youth was able to be catechised and prepared for the reception of the sacraments; and became a fervent Christian.  This charitable work later led the Church to confer on him another title, that of Patron of the Hearing Impaired.
