While contacting the hostile Calvinists of Chablais in his late twenties, Francis became an expert at the art of communicating in writing the truths of faith with clarity and attractiveness.  When he found that the people refuse to come to listen to his sermons and conferences, he wrote small tracts and slipped them under the doors of the houses [St. Francis de Sales, Spiritual Conferences, Tr. Later these were collected into a book and it is known as The Controversies in the Annecy Edition, Vol. 1 [Cf. St. Francis de Sales, Introduction to the Devout Life, SFS Publications, Bangalore, 1990, Translator’s Introduction, p. 40].
