JOY

 

Live joyfully! Our Lord is looking down on you lovingly. Holy joy, or as we should say, joyful holiness would be a good motto for our time. (Müller, p. 74)

We shall never experience total joy so long as we are in this mortal life this grace is reserved to the blessed Spirits in heaven ... nevertheless, try to attain it in the greatest possible degree. (Spiritual Conferences, 1)

While only two good streams [compassion and repentance] flow from the spring of sadness, there are six which are quite evil [anxiety, sloth, anger, jealousy, envy and impatience]. (Introduction to the Devout Life, Part IV, Chapter 12).

Evil sadness disturbs us, leads us to anxiety, arouses unreasonable fear, makes prayer distasteful, weighs down and dulls the mind, deprives us of counsel, of determination of judgement and courage and saps our energy it robs us of all consolation and makes us almost paralysed and powerless in all our faculties.
