Part II:  Salesian Commentary

You will find, dear reader, that sometimes I cite the Holy Scriptures in terms other than those which are manifest in the ordinary edition.  O true God, it is not for me to depart from that edition which the Holy Spirit has authorized by (action of) the Sacred Council of Trent and which we are all obliged to uphold.  But I employ the other versions in its service when they explain and confirm its true sense.[1]

N.B.  To permit better a reading of the Canticle of Canticles verse by verse, we have composed in script the Salesian translation of the biblical text; in this way it is better disengaged from the commentary, properly speaking.  However, the commentary itself contains numerous versions of translations. [1] Oeuvres de St. Francois de Sales. Annecy: Religieuses de la Visitation, 1893-1993), Tome IV, p. 9.  Treatise on the Love of God, Preface.  Here it is a question of a choice of texts; the citations are actually very numerous.  We find them in detail in Oeuvres de St. Francois de Sales, Tome XXVII, pp. 246ff.
